What is Massing Study?

A massing study explores the overall three-dimensional form a building can take on its site — height, bulk, setbacks, orientation — before any detailed design. It answers how much building fits and how it sits in context.

In practice

Early-stage tools generate massing options against zoning constraints and score them on yield, daylight, and views. Massing is where zoning, program, and design intent first collide, so fast iteration matters.
