What It Is

A browser-based whole-life carbon platform for building projects and portfolios. It estimates embodied, operational, refrigerant, site, and landscape emissions, then lets teams replace early assumptions with assemblies, products, energy data, and Revit takeoffs as the design develops.

A project team can set a carbon baseline and compare reduction scenarios while the program and massing are still changing. Detailed whole-building LCA usually starts after the team has quantities, assemblies, and energy data. C.Scale starts with six inputs: project name, year, location, use, levels, and area. It infers a baseline, shows carbon hot spots, and compares design scenarios. The team can then add project-specific structures, enclosures, interiors, sitework, products, and energy assumptions. Organization accounts combine projects into portfolios and export data for AIA 2030 and internal dashboards.

Where It Plugs In:

The browser platform can begin from an RFP or project brief before BIM. Teams compare scenarios, add assemblies and specific products, then export project or portfolio data. Tally 2.0 connects Revit takeoffs to a C.Scale scenario, and the API can place the calculation model inside Rhino, Grasshopper, or a firm-built application.

User Experience

Speed: The vendor says a baseline and three scenarios take ten minutes or less, a preliminary assessment takes under 30 minutes, and a detailed assessment takes a few hours. AEC Hub has not reproduced those timings.

Interface: A browser project workspace for assumptions, scenarios, assemblies, products, charts, portfolios, and exports. Tally 2.0 adds a Revit interface with model-element definitions and live impact results.

Learning Curve: Moderate. Six inputs produce a first result, but a defensible comparison still requires consistent scope, life-cycle stages, time horizon, energy assumptions, quantities, EPDs, and treatment of stored carbon.

Collaboration: Organization accounts allow several team members to edit a shared project and group projects into static or rule-based portfolios. Individual accounts and organization starter accounts are free, with the starter organization capped at three projects.

Integrations: Tally 2.0 supports Revit 2024 through 2027. The REST API accepts and returns JSON and is intended for Rhino, Grasshopper, and internal tools. Exports include AIA 2030 DDx data, Excel, CSV, JSON, and PDF.

Bonus Insight

C.Scale's own documentation describes concept results as directionally accurate and says anecdotal comparisons with detailed whole-building LCA and hourly operational models differ by 5 to 30 percent before customization. A 2026 academic review of 13 building-scale LCA tools supports C.Scale's value for early decisions, carbon hot-spot analysis, benchmarking, renewable-energy tradeoffs, and separate treatment of biogenic carbon. The same review notes that simplified or fixed assumptions for transportation, construction, replacement, and end-of-life stages limit accuracy for detailed project-specific analysis. Compare tools only after matching the analysis scope and assumptions. Tally 2.0 needs a separate caution. The vendor calls the current release a beta, says it may crash or return incorrect results, and prohibits using it for reporting or compliance. It supports Revit 2024 through 2027, excludes MEP, does not accept custom LCA data, and sends only structure, enclosure, and interiors into C.Scale. Its documentation also tells users not to enter private or confidential data during the beta. C.Scale's July 2026 privacy policy says design activity may function as a lead-generation signal for building-product partners. A firm should ask what project, product-selection, and specification activity partners can see and require the answer in its agreement. The free organization starter plan covers three projects, while unlimited organization access, the API, and the paid plan required for Tally 2.0 use quote-based pricing.
