In-Depth Review: Autodesk Forma
What It Is
Autodesk's early-stage design environment, built from the Spacemaker acquisition. You test massing options on a real site and get sun, daylight, solar energy, wind, noise, microclimate, operational energy, and carbon analyses back in seconds, then send the scheme to Revit.
Who It's For
Architects and planners doing site and massing studies, especially anyone already paying for the AEC Collection, which includes Forma Site Design at no extra cost.
Why It Matters
The environmental analyses that used to require a specialist and a week run here in seconds, because the rapid wind and noise modes use machine learning surrogates rather than full simulation. That changes when the analysis happens: during the design conversation rather than as a verification step after the massing is fixed.
Problem Solved
Early massing decisions set the environmental performance of a building, and the analysis that would inform them usually arrives too late to change anything. Forma runs sun hours, daylight, solar potential, wind, noise from road and rail, microclimate, operational energy, and embodied and total carbon against massing you can still move. The Revit add-in then converts proposal buildings, site limits, terrain, and buildable areas into editable Revit elements.
Audience Fit
Primary Users:
- Architect
- Urban Planner
- Sustainability Consultant
- Designer
Ideal Fit:
- Firms already on the AEC Collection, since Forma Site Design is included
- Site and massing studies where daylight, wind, or noise shape the scheme
- Teams that document in Revit and want a connected early-stage step
- Sustainability work needing embodied and operational carbon early
Key Differentiator
Environmental analysis in seconds on massing you can still change, included with the AEC Collection
Workflow Fit
Project Phases Covered:
- Feasibility
- Concept
- Schematic
Where It Plugs In:
Precedes BIM authoring rather than replacing it. The Revit add-in sends a scheme into Revit as editable elements and returns data to Forma for analysis. Autodesk frames it as design now, Revit next.
User Experience
Speed: Rapid wind and noise analyses return in seconds using machine learning surrogate models, with detailed modes available
Interface: Cloud-only with no offline mode. Note that Forma now names several products, and this entry covers Forma Site Design, the Spacemaker descendant
Learning Curve: Gentle relative to simulation tools, since the analyses are built in rather than configured
Collaboration: Cloud-based sharing within an Autodesk account
Integrations: Revit add-in with two-way transfer, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and a data marketplace for site context including Cityweft buildings
Bonus Insight
Get the name right before you evaluate anything, because Autodesk now applies Forma to several products and online reviews routinely confuse them. Forma Site Design is the Spacemaker descendant covered here. Forma Building Design is a separate product launched in April 2026 for schematic design at roughly LOD 200. Forma Data Management and Forma Board come from the Construction Cloud lineage. What Forma does not do matters as much as what it does: there is no 2D drawing capability, no construction documents, no schedules, no detailing, and no family authoring, so it precedes Revit rather than replacing it, and AEC Magazine reported that Autodesk would not commit to a timeline for drawing automation in the new building design product. It performs no code compliance checking and no structural or MEP analysis. Two practical cautions. Site context and terrain data quality varies by region and no coverage list is published, so test your market first. And AEC Magazine has reported customer concern that API usage beyond monthly limits can escalate cost, which is worth asking about if you plan automated workflows. The accuracy claim for the rapid machine learning analyses is Autodesk's own and has no published independent validation, so treat early results as directional and verify anything that will be represented to a client or an authority.
