What is Clash Detection?
Clash detection is the automated checking of a coordinated building model for physical conflicts — a duct running through a beam, a pipe occupying the same space as a cable tray. Software flags hard clashes (objects intersecting) and soft clashes (objects violating required clearances).
In practice
Clash detection runs on the federated model during design and preconstruction, turning coordination from visual inspection into a managed issue list. Newer AI tools extend the idea to 2D drawing sets, cross-referencing sheets for conflicts without needing a model.
Tools for Clash Detection
Articulate
AI trained on construction drawings cross-references every sheet to catch coordination conflicts and code issues, with one-click RFIs to Procore.
Firmus
AI reads 2D drawing sets to flag scope gaps, missing information and risks before they become RFIs and change orders.
