What is 4D BIM?

4D BIM links the 3D model to the construction schedule so the build sequence can be played as a simulation — every element appears when its activity is planned. Time is the fourth dimension.

In practice

4D is used to rehearse sequencing, plan logistics and crane positions, and communicate the plan visually to owners and trades. Optioneering tools take it further, generating and comparing thousands of possible sequences.
